Developing Winning Sales Habits

A good businessperson does more than just offer pitches to potential customers. They get to know their customers and show that they want to help. They are motivated, confident, and willing to put in the work it takes to succeed.

Any business person who wants to succeed knows they can’t just wake up and wing it. Certain sales habits can be helpful for them and their business. Good sales habits can make all the difference.

Don’t forget to follow up

It can be easy to forget to follow up with someone when you have so much going on, but this can hurt your business. Failing to follow up lets the customer know that they aren’t that important and they’re just another dollar sign to you.

You want your customers to feel like you value them. This is what turns them into repeat customers. Do whatever you need to do to remember to follow up. Write it down, put it in your schedule, or set up a reminder on your phone. Find a way that works best for you.

It’s even a good idea to make notes about what you talked about so you can mention some of those things in your follow-up. This shows your customer that you actually remember them and they were not just another meeting for you.

Focus on the customer.

I’m sure we’ve all heard the quote by Epictetus that says, “We have two ears and one mouth so that we can listen twice as much as we speak.”

When it comes to business, it’s important to remember that the customer is what really matters. Without them, you have no business. It’s critical to know how to listen to someone without taking over the whole conversation yourself.

Your customers have specific wants and needs. They’re all unique. You have to listen to them to find out what those wants and needs are for each person. Ask them questions to help them figure it out as well and to ensure understanding.

Wait until you’ve heard them out completely before you try to sell to them. This shows them that you care and you truly want to help them.

Be prepared for change

Numbers change. Customers change. Products change.

One of the best sales habits of highly successful people is making sure they’re always prepared for anything. Some weeks will be better than others. Sometimes customers change their minds. The price of a product may suddenly have to increase one day.

It can help to think of these possibilities ahead of time so that you’ll already know the best way to handle them. Adaptability is a quality everyone needs.

Research your products or services

You might think you already know enough about whatever you’re selling, but don’t forget that anyone can research these days. Customers often research a product before buying it, meaning they learn all the pros and cons. Be ready for customers to mention even the worst things possible about your product or service so that you can fully explain its value.

Customers want to trust the people they’re buying from, so prove you know what you’re talking about.

Be enthusiastic and engaging

Don’t be afraid to let potential customers see how much you love what you do and how great you think your product or service is. Why would they want to buy from someone who seems to hate their job or whatever it is they’re selling? That sends the wrong message.

Find ways to be in a good mood before you even start your workday. Get enough sleep, work out, meditate, or whatever else makes you happy. When you’re not happy, your customers won’t be happy.

Set specific goals

People who set goals and stick to them are statistically more successful than those who don’t. When you meet a goal, you’ll likely feel excited and motivated to keep going and do even better.

Some people like to remember the acronym SMART. Goals should be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely. Setting smart goals helps you stay focused, and the likelihood of you meeting your goals increases.

Plus, some people thrive on challenging themselves to meet goals. A challenge can be a great motivator.

Keep learning

Your education shouldn’t stop once you leave school. A good business person knows there is always something new to learn. Read books and blogs, stay up to date on your industry, listen to seminars, and be willing to take advice from people with more experience than you.

Never stop being a student. Don’t settle for being on the same level for the rest of your life. Improve your life and your work by learning as much as possible as often as possible.

Look for ways to improve

Learning more isn’t the only way you should improve. It would be best if you also regularly looked at how you do things and figure out how to improve.

Do you need to work on your people skills? Should you work on your time management? Maybe you have trouble staying on task. Be honest with yourself and figure out what you can do to improve yourself to be the best version of yourself possible.

Although these habits alone won’t bring you success, people who employ winning sales habits are much more likely to succeed than those with bad sales habits. Good habits show how committed you are to your business, and that can make all the difference.

Think of some good sales habits you want to start doing to help you succeed, and do it!
